i usually go mp3 or ogg.

i personally do 192 or 256 as my bitrate. Just depends on much you wanna sacrifice to take up less storage.

What format for importing do you guys use? I just ripped half my collection using apples lossless and wound up filling a big ipod. Is it that much bigger than the ACC?

Also, what about the levels 64, 128, 192: any recommendation for setting that?

Apple Loseless is quite a bit bigger than AAC (m4a) or mp3.

I use m4a at a custom setting of 192 and it seems to work great. Only drawback is m4a only plays on iPods or iTunes so if you want to go to a different software/player you would have to rip the CD's again

no real reason to go lossless,
this only really cuts the file size in half
i use the aac with a 192 bitrate and it sounds great.
the bitrate number is how compressed the file gets the lower the number the more compressed the worse the sound, this also depends on the format as apple claims using aac at 128 is comparable to mp3 at 192, play around with the same song, saving it at diffrent bitrates and listening to it through headphones, when you find one that sounds good to you run with it
